November, 2011
The rain continued to wreak havoc with the potato harvest. There were some good harvest days in November, but not enough.
There are about two acres of potatoes that we will not get. And, what we did get was very muddy.
So Ken & Rick decided to adjust the packing line to add more feet of washing to rinse off all the mud.
Potato deliveries did not start until after Thanksgiving. Onions are sold out. What a year.
October, 2011
... and still the rains come!!
We did not get any flooding at Laurel Vista Farms this summer and fall because
we are at the top of our watershed. But the rain did wreak havoc with our season.
SOMERSET SNAPS GREEN BEANS
Starting on Sunday night before Labor Day, constant rain waterlogged our fields so we could not harvest green beans,
and it provided a great breeding ground for rust -- a mold that attacks certain vegetables like green beans.
All remaining green bean fields were lost, and so, no green beans reached market for the remainder of green bean season.
SOMERSET SWEET ONIONS
Deliveries have started to grocery stores!! Look for Somerset Sweets in Giant Eagle and Market District stores!!
Rain also affected the onion crop. We were able to get all of the Somerset Sweet Onions harvested;
however, the season will be abbreviated. Rain delayed planting and the onions did not
get the growing season length that they need. So there is a limited supply that will only last about 4 weeks instead of 10.
SOMERSET SPUDS POTATOES
The potato harvest is proceeding between bouts of rain. The Spuds harvested so far look great
and we should have a good potato year if we can get them out of the ground before the hard freeze comes.
We need about ten or so harvest friendly (i.e., dry) days to finish.
SEND THE RAIN TO TEXAS!!
July, 2011
Ken and Rick and the Laurel Vista Farms crew (Clay and Drew) were really busy this spring.
Rain kept them out of the fields all through April and the first half of May, so there was a lot of
catch up going on these past two months. But, now, rain is welcome because everything is planted
and growing nicely!

Somerset Snaps Green Beans will soon blossom. Expect to start seeing them in stores and enjoying them in restaurants late July / early August.
Somerset Sweet Onions are reaching for the sky! Look for them in stores mid to late September.
Somerset Spuds Potatoes are really looking good, especially considering how late they got in the ground. But they'll be ready mid to late October, so start asking about them in restaurants and stores then.

Somerset Sweet
While Ken & Rick figure out how to change the on-line store to add their new products (see above),
you can order from their complete product catalog by using this
ORDER FORM .
Onion & Garlic Jam Somerset Snaps
Dilly Beans Combo
Jam & Dilly Beans

Enjoy Somerset Sweet Onion
and Garlic Jam on burgers and
hot dogs. It's also great on cheese,
crackers, and as a glaze for
roasted meats and vegetables.
Use it as a base for
cream cheese dip (see below).
Uniquely flavorful because
it's made from Somerset Sweet Onions. Somerset Snaps Dilly Beans
are like kosher dill pickles, but
with more class and a little sass
because, after all, they ARE --
Somerset Snaps Green Beans.
Great any where you'd use a dill pickle.
OutSTANDing in a Bloody Mary.
The best of both!
